Brunel University through Professor Kai Cheng and his team (Advanced Manufacturing Enterprise Engineering Group), have focused their research on precision machining, nanometric cutting and facilities, the integration of CAD/CAM, and inspection methods for manufacturing automation, and Internet based e-manufacturing. Investigation into nano/micro and precision surfaces generation (modelling, simulation and machining verification) and precision machine tools design and performance analysis are strength areas.

Kai Chengholds the Chair professorship in Manufacturing Systems at Brunel University. His current research interests focus on design of precision machines and instruments, nano/micro engineering, e-design and e-manufacturing. Professor Cheng has published about 160 papers in learned international journals and referred conferences, authored/edited 3 books and contributed 5 book chapters. He worked as a senior lecturer in Glasgow Caledonian University before joining with Leeds Metropolitan University. Professor Cheng is a member of the IMechE and the IEE. He is the leader of the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Research Group (AMTRG) which is currently working on a number of research projects funded by the UK EPSRC, EU 6th Framework Program, TCS Programs, UK DTI, and the industry.
