  Presentation of the organization
The Department in which the research will be conducted derives its name form the three cornerstones of manufacturing - design, manufacture and engineering management. The Department has assembled experts who have achieved international status in research in those three areas and have excellent track records in attracting EU, National, and industrial funds. The Manufacturing Engineering Research Centre researches and develops processes, tools, machinery and numerical modelling techniques for improving the economic and technical performance of metal conversion technologies (Precision manufacture at macro- and micro-levels). The Design Research Group is concerned with the application of computing technology in the support of design and design management. The Computer Aided Design Centre aims to develop the computing technology that supports a design partnership between man and machine, and to deliver the underlying technology, techniques and approaches to industry. The Rapid Design and Manufacturing Centre is a multi-technology centre. Its mission is to make Rapid Prototyping more accessible through a pro-active research and education programme using state-of-the-art facilities. The Centre for Strategic Manufacturing is to facilitate performance improvements in manufacturing through development of scientifically grounded but practical management models.

Neal Juster
Prof. Neal Juster, the Dean of Engineering Faculty. His research interests include the use of rapid and virtual prototyping and assembly modelling in support of the product introduction process. He is also involved in the use of collaborative design techniques and systems in support of team-based design education. Neal is a Fellow of the IMechE and the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures, and Commerce, a Vice-Chair of the IMechE Manufacturing Industries Division, a member of the IMechE Academic Standards Committee.

  Role in the project
Strathclyde will manage the MASMICRO project as the Project Co-ordinator, will play a key role in developing product design methodology and the system, developing intelligent tools and flexible forming-machine systems, and participating in manufacturing systems integration, as well as carrying out tasks for modelling and analysis, dissemination and exploitation of the project results, and developing training programmes.
